A Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ

So what does it mean to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? First, we must be born again. The Gospel of John, chapter 3, verse 3 says "Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." When we are born again through faith in the Gospel, we will receive the promised Holy Spirit "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about me." John 15:26

The Holy Spirit will convict us of sin, guide us in rightousness, prompt us to holiness and accomplish many other tasks in a believer's life. But for the purpose of this study, I'd like to focus on the Holy Spirit's ministry of "bearing witness" about who Jesus is.

In order to have a personal relationship with someone, we have to know them. We all know "about" certain people, like celebrities for example. But we don't actually know them personally. The personal relationships we have built in our own lives, have developed over time. People like family and close friends. People we have come to know by spending time with. People we trust, and can go to in times of trouble. People we confide in. People we enjoy being with, and have things in common with. People who are important to us.

Do you see where I am going with this? There is a big difference between knowing about God, and actually knowing Him through a personal relationship by faith in Christ.
