Project Gunrunner/Operation Fast & Furious

The five key accusations against ATF and DOJ, made by ATF whistleblowers and other sources within the FedGov

1. That they instructed U.S. gun dealers to proceed with questionable and illegal sales of firearms to suspected gunrunners.

2. That they allowed or even assisted in those guns crossing the U.S. border into Mexico to "boost the numbers" of American civilian market firearms seized in Mexico, and thereby provide the justification for more firearm restrictions on American citizens, and more power and money for ATF.

3. That they intentionally kept Mexican authorities in the dark about the operation, even over objections of their own agents.

4. That weapons that the ATF let "walk" to Mexico were involved in the deaths of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and ICE agent Jaime Zapata, as well as at least hundreds of Mexican citizens.

5. That at least since the death of Brian Terry on December 14, 2010, the Obama administration is engaged in a full-press cover-up of the facts behind what has become known as the "Gunrunner Scandal."

The People

Insiders at the ATF, including Special Agent John Dodson, Agent Rene Jaquez and retired Agent Darren Gil, former ATF attaché to Mexico. These were the first agents to come forward. Other agents have since testified.

Mike Vanderboegh who runs the blog Sipsey Street Irregulars and who first verified the claims of the ATF agents.

David Codrea, the gun rights activist who runs the National Firearms Examiner blog and first revealed Project Gunrunner to a wider public audience.

Sharyl Attkisson, the CBS reporter who first broke the story in the mainstream media. Prior to her reporting, the scandal was known of only within the firearms community and blogosphere.

Senator Chuck Grassley and Rep Darrell Issa. The two Congressmen who started the formal investigation. To date, three public hearings have been held by the House Oversight Committee, as well as a private interview of Kenneth Melson, acting Director of ATF.

Understanding the Names

Project Gunrunner was an ATF program begun under the Bush administration to arrest straw-purchasers and gun smugglers moving guns to Mexico. From 2005 through 2008, it was moderately successful and resulted in hundreds of arrests and prosecutions.

Operation Fast and Furious is a separate program that began in 2009. The ATF launched this program using Project Gunrunner funding and reportedly moved the focus from the straw-buyer to the "higher level" players. Their claim was that they were targeting those with the money to buy guns and move them to Mexico. It was under Operation Fast and Furious that ATF agents simply watched guns "walk" over the border into Mexico and lost track of them. At least until they turned up at crime scenes.

Gunwalker is the term David Codrea coined to name the scandal when rumors of it first surfaced in connection with Project Gunrunner. It's important to know that Project Gunrunner and Operation Fast and Furious are two different operations. Often times the media treats them as one in the same. They are not, and the Obama administration has used this confusion to deny knowledge and culpability.

NOTE - Other operations have now been identified. Operation Castaway was run out of the Miami ATF office. In addition, two other operations have recently been verified through court documents, although we do not know what names they were given. One of these two was an ATF operation out of Texas. The other, which we are just beginning to learn more about, was run out of Chicago.

What really happened

Shortly after Obama took office, he and his administration, along with the MSM, were trying to push the 90% lie. Their claim, which was almost immediately proved to be false, was that 90% of the weapons used by the Mexican drug cartels had come from the US. In fact, the real number is closer to 18% (and the administration knew this). Yet they kept trying to push the 90% number so they would have an easier time getting another 'assult weapons' ban through Congress.

"Never let a crisis go to waste", as spoken by Rahm Emanuel. But what do you do when there isn't a crisis? You manufacture one. At least that's the ideology behind this current administration.

It's interesting to note the March 30th meeting that anti-gun activists Sarah Brady and her husband Jim had on Capitol Hill. The Washington Post reports: "During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, 'to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda,' she said. 'I just want you to know that we are working on it,' Brady recalled the president telling them. 'We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar' (italics added).

I believe, and the evidence seems to be showing that; the Obama Administration, lead by Eric Holder's DOJ, set out to illegally traffic firarms to the Mexican Cartels, to bring about increased levels of violence on the border. This would allow them to be able to pass much sticter gun control laws here in America. I believe that not only were the DOJ and ATF involved in this operation, but that the DEA, FBI, ICE, and the State Dept. had roles to play in this scandal as well. At least two thousand weapons have been "walked" across the Mexican border, resulting in hundreds of Mexican lives being lost, as well as two American Federal Agents. And that's what we know about today! How many more people may die becuase of this scandal is not yet known.

The House Oversight Committee

Rep Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has held three public hearings on this scandal so far. More hearings are in the works. Much of the evidence we have, has come from the testimony given at these hearings. Handgun Club of America has put together a .pdf document of the entire scandal, from it's inception, through mid July of this year (2011). Contained within their document, are detailed facts and findings from those hearings, charts, dates, a complete timeline, along with a wealth of information about the entire Gunrunner/Fast & Furious debacle. Although the document is 32 pages long, I would encourage everyone to read it. Please feel free to download and share the document with your friends. Since the MSM has been reluctant to do any serious reporting on this scandal, I believe it's up to us to inform the public.
